Descrizione dell'iniziativa

The Workshop ‘Walking for Mending. The Calabria of Villages and Marinas' aims to explore the possibilities of socio-ecological regeneration of the territory of Fuscaldo, in Calabria, through the recovery of an ancient stepped pathway, the "100 scaluni", which is currently in a state of abandonment and wilderness.Fuscaldo is a small municipality in the province of Cosenza, overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast. It is known for its extensive areas of great natural and landscape value and a settlement system marked by a distinct duality. The ‘Paese' is a highland village with a medieval fabric that is now experiencing abandonment and shrinkage. In contrast, the ‘Marina' is a coastal settlement developed in the second half of the 20th century. While the Marina is more accessible due to road and railway infrastructures, it is characterised by a poorer quality built heritage. In a context characterised by phenomena of depopulation and shrinkage, the design challenge that the workshop activity intends to focus on concerns the (re)activation of the Fuscaldo territory and the reconnection between the ‘Paese' and the ‘Marina' through the recovery of the ‘100 scaluni' path, as a new axis of socio-ecological regeneration of Fuscaldo. The Workshop activities will take place at the Casa Canonica, in the heart of Fuscaldo's historic centre, from Monday 9 to Saturday 14 September 2024. The participating students, guided by mentors from different geographical and disciplinary backgrounds, will question the future of Fuscaldo, exploring the possibilities of regeneration connected to the revitalisation and recovery of the ‘100 scaluni' path, today in a state of abandonment and wilderness.  The workshop aims at generating opportunities for discussion and dialogue between citizens, civil society representatives and professionals, professors and researchers from different disciplines in order to enhance the local identity elements and mobilise the latent and potential resources of Fuscaldo, which concern both the material dimension – such as the architectural heritage, and the spontaneous nature that colonises the built environment as well as the uncultivated agricultural areas – and the immaterial dimension, such as the set of practices, uses and customs of the local tradition. The workshop also intends to promote the creation of an archive of memories on Fuscaldo as evidence of the accumulation and stratification of histories and events of the past and present and a study device capable of orienting the future transformations of the local context.
The workshop is organised by the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU) of the Politecnico di Milano, in collaboration with the inter-university network Laboratorio del Cammino and under the patronage of the municipality of Fuscaldo.
