Who we are

Journey into the world of research at Politecnico di Milano

Frontiere is the magazine that tells the stories of research at the Politecnico di Milano.

A website and a monthly newsletter dedicated to all those who want to know the faces and stories of the people involved in research, the activities that take place in our laboratories, the impact that all this has on our lives, on society and on the world.

A sharp and accessible gaze that analyses the present, enhances the past and looks at the new frontiers of the future.

I tell you about (my) research

The stories of the researchers from their own voices. Interviews, conferences, stories that make us better acquainted with the people who every day continue the mission of projecting the research of the Politecnico towards the future.

Synergy, diversity and passion make research successful

While Paola Antonietti tells her story, we read her love for mathematics in her eyes. A love that was born as a child, and then has taken her to the Politecnico, where she is now a professor of numerical analysis.

But what does it mean for you to do research? Above all, it means creating synergies between several researchers. Maybe that is why with her project NEMESIS has earned European funding that bears the name of ERC SYNERGY GRANT.

Meetings

The great guests of the Politecnico di Milano. Researchers, personalities from the world of culture and science, architects, designers and engineers of world renown. Their stories have been intertwined in different ways with the Polytechnic. We met them for you.

The environmental adventurer

Some time ago Alex Bellini, explorer and environmental popularizer from Valtellina, came to visit us at the Politecnico.

We made the climatic chamber of the LiDuP Laboratory available to him to test the resistance to the Alaskan cold, down to -40°C, of his bicycle 3D printed in recycled polycarbonate, with which he then traveled 1,800 km on snow and sand.

Inside research

Are you curious to explore the laboratories of our university, where theories and studies take concrete shape? Let us visit them together with their protagonists, who will be our guides.

In the laboratory where heat is studied

The ThermALab is the "heat laboratory" of the Department of Energy founded and coordinated by Professor Alfonso Niro. Experimental research activities are carried out here, which is often accompanied by numerical modelling, on issues related to heat exchange.

Analysis of thermal dispersion and energy consumption, spectrophotometric measurements of optical properties in the UV-Vis-IR field, spectral characterization of light sources, thermal conductivity measurements, IR thermographic analysis: these are some of the activities that we will try to illustrate to you. Accompanying us is Damiano Fustinoni, who does research and teaching activities at ThermALab.

Since 1863

We retrace the history of the Politecnico through the people, discoveries and events that have made our university great. We discover once again how the past still significantly affects our lives.

BBPRs between architectural design and militant anti-fascism

Studio BBPR has its roots at the Politecnico di Milano, where in 1932 Banfi, Belgiojoso, Rogers and Peressutti graduated from our Faculty of Architecture, working together on their thesis. We tell you about the lives of four men who would change the history of architecture, but who in turn would be overwhelmed by history: the resistance, the exile, the deportation; and for one of them, even premature death.

A patent a month

More than 3,400 patents have been registered thanks to the research experience of the Politecnico di Milano. Let's explore together the most innovative ideas and products that may one day become part of our daily lives.

LIFT Energy: safer and more efficient rechargeable batteries

The development of sustainable mobility and new technologies has opened up new scenarios for the future of humanity but also technical and logistical needs. From cars to drones and more: batteries are undoubtedly the protagonists of this transition phase and the challenge for the future is to make them more durable and performing.

A challenge accepted by the Fluoritech Laboratory, led by Maurizio Sansotera, who together with his team has patented LIFT Energy.
