Aero Club Adele Orsi

What is it?

Aero Club Adele Orsi is the largest gliding club in Italy and organises sightseeing glider flights in Varese; it is located in Calcinate del Pesce, on Lake Varese, in one of the best places to practice gliding.

What are the benefits?

Politecnico’s students and employees are offered 3 different opportunities/experiences:

  1. INTRODUCTORY FLIGHT including a pre-flight briefing for minimum two people; possibility of a glider flight of approximately 30 minutes with a flyover of the city of Varese, Sacro Monte di Varese and Campo dei Fiori. The flight will be conducted by an instructor and can be organised either during the week or at the weekend, depending on the high or low season of the Aero Club. The cost for PoliMI students and employees is € 150 (usual price € 170, university student price € 160). Subject of the pre-flight briefing: daily glider checks, flight controls and instrumentation, pre-flight briefing, glider performance: distance and altitude achieved, profile of a distance flight, flight efficiency - the polar curve, weather conditions: thermals and waves, different types of gliders, how to get a glider pilot's licence, GLIDER FLIGHT. During the glider flight, students/employees will be able to experience that which they learned during the pre-flight briefing.
  2. PARTICIPATION IN THE FREE THEORY COURSE FOR OBTAINING A GLIDER PILOT'S LICENCE
    The theory course consists of 20 lessons of 3 hours each, which can be attended from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends during pre-scheduled periods (2 sessions per year), mainly in person.
    The subjects covered are: aviation regulation and air traffic control, human performance, meteorology, radio communications, principles of flight, operational procedures, flight performance, general aircraft knowledge, flight planning.
    The theoretical course is free of charge.
  3. ENROLMENT IN THE FLIGHT SCHOOL FOR OBTAINING A GLIDER PILOT'S LICENCE
    The Flying School includes a theory course and a flying course. At least 15 hours of flight and 45 flights are included. The course is open all year round and can be started at any time. The total duration of the course varies from 6 to 10 months.
    The total cost for obtaining the licence of course changes depending on the learning progress of the student and the cost is around €4,500. The cost is considerably reduced for applicants aged under 23 years, according to the Statute of Aero Club d'Italia Statutes and the Rules and Regulations of Aero Club Adele Orsi.
    PoliMI students and employees over 23 years of age will be granted a €150 discount at the time of registration.

How does it work?

In order to access the discounts, you must present your university ID card and a valid identity document directly to the facility.
