Didactic activities
- DESIGN STUDIOS: project base courses, involve different Professors and students usually work in teams
- MONODISCIPLINARY COURSES: they are characterized by the theoretic contents taught in lectures and verified throughout the year with tests and interviews.
- INTEGRATED COURSES: they cover more than one discipline or specific context. They are complementary and taught by several professors.
- WORKSHOPS: project base activity held at the end of each semester in one fulltime week and host International professors and/or companies.
- ELECTIVE COURSES: interdisciplinary courses, combine project and theory activities.
Course selection rules
- As an exchange student, you can select 6 credits minimum up to 30 credits maximum per semester (1 credit = 1 CFU = 1 ECTS). This normally equates to 3 or 4 courses per semester.
- Aim for 1 Design Studio and 2-3 smaller courses for a more balanced schedule.
- The courses you select should align with your program and level of studies.
- Avoid selecting only small courses, as this increases your workload significantly.
- You can select courses offered by the School of Architecture or the School of Engineering for up to 12 credits per semester.
- You can select a maximum of 3 Elective Courses per semester.
Elective Courses are transversal courses and host students from different programs, they’re offered in the 3rd year of Bachelor programs and the 1st or 2nd year of Master programs, and can be found in the track labeled "non diversified".
PLEASE NOTE: Exchange students at bachelor level can select and mix courses from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of Bachelor, considering that:
- 1st year courses are usually at an introductory level and may not require much previous knowledge or study in the subject. 2nd and 3rd year courses will normally require some previous study in the subject.
- Most of our Bachelor-level courses are taught in Italian, though some may offer academic support in English. You can find this information in the Course Details.
We recommend that you do not choose courses without English support unless you have at least a good knowledge of Italian.
Good to know
- Most of the courses are available but have a limited number of places. Therefore, exchange students are strongly encouraged to identify additional courses as backups.
- The allocations in the courses are determined by the "first arrived, first served" rule. The earlier you submit your Study Plan, the better it is.
- Before submitting your study plan, make sure the courses you select do not overlap by using the “Customized Schedule” tool at the Manifesto degli Studi.
Course timetables are also available on the School of Design website at this link. - Pay attention to the location of each course to avoid selecting consecutive classes held on different campuses.

Final project thesis
Please note that it is not possible for incoming design students to develop a final project thesis.
