Descrizione dell'iniziativa
Biodesign is an interdisciplinary design approach that integrates biological science and engineering into the design process to develop innovative and less-impacting solutions inspired by natural processes. It does not simply take inspiration from nature, but actively integrates living organisms into designs, promoting a deep understanding of biological dynamics, natural cycles and ecological principles. DESIGNING WITH NATURE explores not only how biological processes can be mimicked, but also how resources can be responsibly used, regenerated and enhanced to create materials, products and systems that respond concretely to the environmental and social challenges of our time. Biodesign is about co-creating with nature rather than manipulating it, promoting a positive interaction between people and the environment. It involves the design and development of materials and artefacts that respect natural life cycles, promote alternative temporalities, minimise waste and negative impacts through biodegradability, and promote regenerative ecologies AND RESILIENT FUTURES.
Projects developed during the course will have the opportunity to compete in the BIODESIGN CHALLENGE 2025. The Biodesign Challenge is an international competition (https://www.biodesignchallenge.org/registration/biodesign-challenge-2025)that allows students to imagine, design and prototype innovative solutions using design and biotechnology tools/ methodologies to address environmental and social challenges. In this passion in action, students will work on projects, exploring the intersection of biology, design and sustainability. They will be invited to address real-world, environmental challenges by incorporating principles of living-system into their design solutions.
The course aims to provide an in-depth understanding of Biodesign as an interdisciplinary approach combining biological sciences, design and engineering. Participants will explore how biological processes can be integrated into design to create sustainable and regenerative solutions. Participants will conduct explorations to design innovative materials, products and systems that are inspired by, and co-created with, natural processes. Particular emphasis will be placed on adopting a 'more than human' perspective considering the interdependence between humans, living organisms and ecosystems. One of the main objectives is to learn and experiment how Biodesign can see environmental problems as creative opportunities, to develop closed-loop solutions, virtuous behaviours, and systems that respect the principles of regeneration and sustainability. The course also aims to make participants aware of the importance of biodiversity by developing projects that support local ecosystems.
Periodo di svolgimento
dal February 2025 a June 2025
Calendario
Course starts on 18 February, other dates will be announced.
Theoretical lectures are given in person on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, approximately from 5pm to 7pm. We will be available to deliver the lecture for those who are able to attend during the chosen evening slot, while those who are unable to attend will still have access to the recording.
As for the project work, it can be done independently, with reviews organised with individual groups from time to time.
