Professors emeriti and honorary

Emilio Bartezzaghi

Professor emeritus of Politecnico di Milano

Amedeo Bellini has been Full Professor of Architectural Restoration and then of Theory and History of Restoration. After graduating from the Politecnico di Milano, he spent almost his entire university career there, with the exception of a period of professorship at the IUAV in Venice. At the Politecnico, he co-founded the PhD in Conservation of Architectural Heritage, 1983, of which he was the head for the first three years and a member of the faculty board until his retirement (2011). He headed the Department of Conservation and History of Architectural Heritage from 1986 to 1989. In 1989, he founded the Postgraduate Specialising School in Monument Restoration, which he directed until 2011, and he was three times national co-ordinator of research funded by the Ministry of Public Education (MPI): on restoration in Lombardy in the 19th century, on intervention techniques on traditional buildings, and on restoration in Italy following wartime damage. Active in the national and international debate on restoration, he has also held annual courses at the University of Chieti, and lectured at foreign (Paris, London, Madrid, Valencia, Valladolid) and Italian (Venice, Genoa, Ferrara, Florence, Rome, Naples, Reggio Calabria, Palermo) universities.

His research activity has mainly covered three complementary areas: the history of architecture from the 18th century to the modern day, making important additions to the catalogue of major figures of 18th century architecture; the history and criticism of the work of masters of 19th and 20th century architectural restoration; and contributions to the formation of a modern theory on the conservation of architectural heritage, the feasibility of which he has shown with interventions on some important Italian monuments.
