EU Projects in Education

European educational projects are mainly funded through the Erasmus+ programme, the EU programme for education, training, youth and sport in Europe. The mobility of students and academic and technical/administrative staff, including to and from non-European countries, is at the heart of Erasmus+ activities. In addition, the Erasmus+ programme funds projects that promote cooperation and exchange of practices, allowing key players to gain international experience and strengthen their network of institutional relations and also to make better use of new technologies, develop innovative teaching, training and learning methods, promote non-formal learning and develop common tools and activities.

Capacity Building (higher education)

Capacity-building projects in the field of higher education are transnational collaborative projects, based on multilateral partnerships created primarily between Higher Education Institutions in programme countries and in eligible partner countries.

These projects aim to support partner countries to:

  • modernise and internationalise higher education and increase access to it
  • addressing the challenges faced by Higher Education Institutions and Systems
  • increasing collaboration within the EU
  • converge on a voluntary basis with higher education developments in the EU
  • promote personal contacts, intercultural awareness and mutual understanding

Key action 1

KA 171 Mobility of higher education students and staff supported by external policy funds (ex KA107 International Credit Mobility)

This action aims to promote the internationalisation of higher education and strengthen the attractiveness of European Universities while at the same time broadening the range of possible destinations to countries in the rest of the world.

This action provides for:

  • Studying (Student Mobility for Study),
  • Teaching (Staff Mobility for Teaching)
  • Training (Staff Mobility for Training)

Individuals cannot apply directly for a mobility grant; instead, Higher Education Institutions can apply within the framework of the call for applications published each year by the European Commission. Each year with the deadline, Politecnico di Milano applies for KA171 according to the expressions of interest received from its professors. A sole application is submitted that covers the entire Politecnico di Milano and consists of one or more country-projects within the geographical area indicated in the call for proposals. The application is assessed by the Erasmus+ INDIRE National Agency according to criteria established by the European Commission. Either the entire application or one or more region-projects can be funded, with possible reduction of the budget requested in the application. Within the framework of funded projects, the mobility of outgoing students, professors and staff takes place according to specific calls issued by the International Mobility Unit.
